Battles yield coins, experience points, and may also reward with magical items. The player is then sent back to the tile board. Multiple waves of enemies will then attack until all are defeated. Two of the player's Skylanders will then be transported to a battleground with features determined by what kind of tile the enemy was standing on. The Skylanders move on maps made of hexagonal tiles, and must move to the enemy's location to initiate a battle.
Skylanders: Battlegrounds puts the Skylanders up against Kaos' armies, lead by his four warlords: Arbor Eater, Mega Chompulon, Chompy Mage, and King Brock.
